Tour Highlights
Valparaíso, located on central Chile’s Pacific coast, was initially inhabited by the fishing and gathering Changos natives until the arrival of Spanish explorers in 1536. It quickly became a vital port for international trade and a crucial stopover for ships navigating between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans via the Strait of Magellan and Cape Horn.
Although the exact date of Valparaíso’s founding is uncertain, it is believed to be around 1559 when Spanish conquerors constructed the La Matriz Church. The port flourished in the 19th century, becoming an essential stop for ships rounding Cape Horn from the Atlantic Ocean and establishing itself as a significant player in international trade.
Waves of English, German, and French immigrants arrived in Valparaíso, drawn by business opportunities. This influx is reflected in the architectural styles of the buildings, reminiscent of mid-19th to early-20th century Europe.
In 2003, Valparaíso was designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, rejuvenating its economy through tourism. The vibrant colors, funiculars, restaurants, artisan shops, and endless stairways now attract tourists and luxury cruise ships alike.
