Toco hill is an old extinct volcano, located 60 km to the southeast of San Pedro de Atacama, known in the area as one of the most accessible mountains to climb, it has a privileged view of the Licancabur and Juriques volcanoes, Laguna Blanca in Bolivia and the Llano from Chaknantor where the famous Alma observatory is. The departure from San Pedro is around 8 am from the hotel to an old sulfur mine located at the base, (9 am), near 5200 meters above sea level. You climb the south face of the mountain, along a path of just over 1.5 km. You start walking around 9:30 am and at about 11 am you are reaching the summit of Toco.
Slope: Approximate 400 meters.
Path: 1,500 meters to the summit.
Rise time: 1:30 to 2 hrs.
Descent time: 30 to 40 minutes.
